Mashich - "Haunted"

On his slow and moody single “Haunted,” Mashich repurposes a soul classic to express
his regret for losing his lover.

“Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone / Only cloudy days and storms” he sings low and
drearily — borrowing a line from the 1971 Bill Withers’ blues tune “Ain’t No Sunshine.” In the
Philadelphia R&B artist’s case, the once-sweet sentiment has a darker meaning — Mashich is
mourning the loyal girl he cheated on. The lush, slow R&B track talks of the gray skies that
cloud the version of his life without her.

“These memories, they're taunting me / Can barely sleep, I'm haunted,” his melodic
voice nearly whispers over an ethereal lo-fi beat. It’s a slower moving track as compared to his
other two singles on streaming services — “The Plug” and “SPECIAL AFFAIR” — but his
lengthy range and captivating passionate vocals allow him to wear his broken spirit on his
sleeve.

Mashich paints a picture of the nightmare he’s been trapped in without his special girl,
using metaphorical lyricism to delve deep into his remorse. “My heart has caught a cold,” he
says, “It's chilled me to the bone.” He embraces his mistakes, but calls out to his ex-lover,
saying that she was his home — and now he’s left without one.

“Haunted” provides a controversial yet interesting perspective — the one of a cheater. It
successfully acts as both Mashich’s confession and diary — a letter to his girl detailing the
emptiness of his world without her. He isn't asking for sympathy; he knows he messed up — but
at the end of the day, he is able to woefully admit the truth to himself — “She ain't never coming
back.”
