Young Bail - "Changes"

On his new single “Changes,” New Brunswick-based rapper Young Bail puts himself first as he
exits a failing relationship. Over a sultry-smooth R&B chorus featuring Leah Jenea that shifts
into a lo-fi Jersey club bounce, Bail talks us through the healing process, how he’s setting out to
“get his sh*t together.”

The beat laced throughout “Changes” is pulsating and upbeat, and Bail effortlessly keeps time
with the speedy flow despite his melancholy. His low voice throughout the song is reminiscent of
the “sexy rap” style that is coming out of both New York and Jersey drill scenes, but his
introspective lyricism, looking at the ways both lovers let each other down, takes it to a deeper
level. There’s an overarching pain in what he raps, as he cycles from being relieved to still
grieving. “Glad it’s done, can't stress no more,” he says in one line; “ I’m giving you the truth & it
hurts it’s pain,” he later admits.

Young Bail’s bars are descriptive and almost ingenious, as he takes well-known phrases and
sayings and reinvents them to fit his own situation. “Take this with a salt & a grain,” he says,
following it up with “lines separate circles like numbers, division.” His rhymes are thought-out
and fun, making the flow of “Changes” both suave and full of soul.
“Changes” isn’t a traditional rap breakup song; it’s a dedication to bettering oneself and taking
the higher route during the exit process. While Young Bail wishes he could stay, as Jenea
dreamily sings in the chorus: “I know that things won’t change.” He ends the track with a
powerful mission statement that captures this acquired, elevated mentality: “I’m setting no hate
in my heart: go live and that’s it.”
