The Detroit rapper details his rise to success through cartoon references
DaeMoney - "King of the Hill"

Over a hazy, nostalgic track that sounds like it was sitting dormant on a VHS tape from 2003, Detroit rapper DaeMoney pays homage to his accomplishments and the cartoons that defined his childhood on the aptly-named “King of the Hill.”

Ever since his come up in 2020, DaeMoney has inched up the Michigan scene through collaborations with his blood uncle Babyface Ray, LUCKI and Veeze — linking up with the three of them to pen his 2021 breakout hit “Who Is That?” While “Who Is That?” is intense and urgent, “King of the Hill” is dreamier and ethereal, with a vaporwave melody and lyrics chock full of throwbacks to the mediascape of the 2000s and early 2010s.

DaeMoney compares himself to Tom Brady due to their shared ability to “bounce back off losses,” to Lil Uzi because he’s “got my money longer” too, and even name-drops staple cartoon characters like Hey Arnold and Spider-Man. It’s an ode to his come-up while also embracing the television stories that had a part in raising him, a different lyric angle yet relatable take for all of us who grew up in front of the monitor.

Similar to his collaborator LUCKI’s style, DaeMoney’s vocals on this track are low and brooding as he lays down witty bars and quips with ease. “King of the Hills'” fast-paced hi-hat beat is pretty standard for Detroit rap, but the retro and airy rhythm adds a deeper flair that calls back to the cloud rap vaporwave renaissance pioneered by rappers like Yung Lean and Lil B.

“We came from the trenches, luxury, that's how we live now,” DaeMoney repeats as the song reaches his outro.

It’s been a long time since he sat in front of the TV watching Hank Hill, but now he finds himself becoming the King of the Hill himself.
