Who knew that theater kids could party until the sun comes up, too? On “Uh Uh (Outside),” singer-songwriter Madelline combines her childhood identities—theater nerd and 2000s pop appreciator—and collages a bustling and shimmery track. Through this “ode to messy club nights,” she embraces the hedonistic and sexy sound of the it girls that inspired her with a showy, thespian spin—that ends up really working for her. 

“Uh Uh (Outside)” starts off with a moving violin symphony, as Madelline softly yearns to hit the streets, then quickly escalates into a sleazy electro beat that is reminiscent of a modern-day “Fergalicious” flow. “The comment section love me / when I’m posted at the clubby,”  she seduces over thumping bloghaus production, embodying the partygirl persona of the 2000s era. The chorus extends that same lo-fi charm, but the song’s theatrical beginning is chopped up and interpolated—as Madelline adapts another role as a leading woman on a stage. She shape shifts these changing arcs throughout the track, a pulsating beat and those catchy “uh uhs” enveloping it all together.

Madelline—dressed up as Mary Poppins in thigh-highs outside of the club on the song’s cover—paints her carefree night out as a work of theatrical art. For two genres that couldn’t seem more opposite from each other, she is able to blend two of her musical backgrounds into a sleek and fun anthem that is perfect for however you want to party, whether it be at a midtown rooftop open bar or post-show cast dinner at Applebee’s.
